Newborn Health
The Newborn Nursery at Stanford is operated in conjunction with the Johnson Center for Pregnancy and Newborn Services in Lucile Packard Children's Hospital.
High patient volume, diversity of patient population, and location within an academic center allow our nursery to play an active role in innovative and relevant research that improves the quality and standard of care delivered to newborn infants.
Our faculty specialize in both population-based research and primary clinical research. Recent topic areas have included use of clinical guidelines, development of web-based decision support tools, universal screening for hyperbilirubinemia, use of transcutaneous bilirubin meters, hospital readmission for hyperbilirubinemia, evaluation of emergency room visits after discharge, breast milk expression and production, and clinical significance of tongue-tie.
Our goal is to conduct research that has a direct and immediate impact on patient care for the largest, most over-looked population: otherwise healthy newborn infants born at or near term.
